I would try and find a 95-00 Honda Civic as they almost last forever and the same with the Toyota Corolla but i wouldnt rule out a nice clean used Ford Focus but i would stay away from Dodge Neons,Chevy Cavaliers,Kias and Hyandais
References :
Well, the Hyundais and Kias of today have descent reliability with horrible resale value (yet another reason not to get a new Hyundai). However, a few years back, they were making really crumby cars that fall apart fast. So, I wouldn't recommend getting a used one. Also, sorry, but generally reliability and good resale value go hand in hand (Toyotas, Hondas, Subarus etc.) Mitsubishis, if you can get them, have good reliability and don't retain their value to well. You could get one, if you can find one that has been taken care of well, that is.

Anyway, I think spending just a little more money for the more reliable make is worth it. We just got a 98 Civic for only $3,100 that's in great condition. I suggest either an old corolla or a civic. Don't worry, there are plenty of those on the road today.
References :
I think that if you can find a used car with one owner that can give you detailed history and proof of maintenance, that would be best. As far any particular car, I would recommend staying away from any of the automatic transmissions since they seem to not last as long as a manual.
References :
www.edmunds.com

If you can find a 95 or newer honda civic (with a manual transmission) that hasn't been modified too much they are great cars. I have a 96 civic hatch that has 195,000 miles on it and is still getting me around just fine.
References :
generally if it says Honda or Toyota you are buying a reliable used car (as the engines are built to last).
